Tofino
The famous Clayoquot Sound mass logging protest in 1993 brought the world’s media to the town and today eco-awareness is as much a part of the fabric of the place as bald eagles, big trees and black bears. The year-round population of Tofino is still under 2,000, but the little town has stepped into the big leagues with its luxury lodges, upscale hotels and spas, world-class cuisine and fantastic shops. Renowned as the top surfing destination in Canada, the wetsuit-clad surfers brave 12° Celsius water (which drops to 7 degrees in the winter!) to tackle some of the best breaks on the West Coast. Last year, Outside magazine named Tofino the best surf town in North America.
