Embark on an invigorating journey into a glorious sense of well-being. Western Canada’s destination spas are places that absorb inspiration from their natural surroundings to relax and rejuvenate mind and body. Massage, cleansing wraps and facials, mineral baths, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures – it can all be found here, along with a few services unique to each region.
Over the last few years, the Canadian Rockies, Okanagan Valley and Vancouver Island are three regions that have seen a sharp increase in spa business, and the number of them continues to grow. Many are attached to resort properties, soothing their guests with round-the-clock rejuvenation and relaxation.
The term "spa" comes from the Latin "salus per aquam," meaning "health from water." It is also the name of a small village in Belgium, home to hot mineral springs where the ancient Roman soldiers went to relieve aches and pains after long marches and battles.
The day spa movement began to catch on in the 1980s, and grew from destination spas, where guests would go for a few days or a week or two to get back on track with proper exercise, diet, and massage. Day spas combine the best of the destination spa concept, and offer enticing escapes from the hustle and bustle of daily life as a way to rejuvenate and relax.
The spa concept has long been popular with women, but that is changing. The numbers of male patrons are on the increase, and most spas now offer a menu of choices designed especially for men. Some even have separate lockers, wet rooms and treatment areas for the guys.
The appeal of spas continues to expand to a wider demographic range. These days, aging baby boomers are taking better care of themselves, and they are bringing their children to spas. They know that the ancient Romans were onto something good with these "fountains of youth." When you mix amazing vacation destinations with some rejuvenating time for body and soul, you’ve got a combination that can’t be beat.
