Welcome to Golden

Opportunity knocks for everyone in Golden! Sitting at the convergence of the Columbia and Kicking Horse Rivers on the TransCanada Highway, Golden is the provincial gateway for travellers to British Columbia arriving from the east, the entry to the Canadian Rocky Mountains from the west coast of Canada and is surrounded by six world-renowned national parks: Glacier, Yoho, Banff, Kootenay, Jasper and Mt. Revelstoke.

GO SC GOTownView1 SHPwebGolden is a four season recreational paradise for both the visitor and the local population. In the late 1800’s, realizing the enormous potential of the Rockies, Canadian Pacific Railway pushed tourism in the area—surrounding their tracks with world-class hotels in Banff and Jasper—as well as travelling experiences unique to the area. Golden soon became the centre of the climbing world when the CPR brought qualified mountaineering guides from Switzerland to help wealthy Europeans climb the untouched peaks surrounding the town.

Guiding is still an important profession in Golden, and eco-tourism has become one of the main industries for the small town. Safe and enjoyable guided trips of all types are available for any skill and fitness level throughout the national parks and wilderness area. The summer brings some of the best whitewater rafting in North America on the Kicking Horse River, as well as hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, golf, kayaking, rock climbing and fishing. Experience the wildlife of the Columbia Wetlands up close and personal on a slow floating tour—or view the Rockies and area from above with a scenic flight between the peaks.

Winter daytime temperatures usually range from -12°C to 2°C, allowing for comfortable access to the outdoors (the weather can sometimes drop to -20°C in the daytime, so be prepared for the cold). Whether adrenalin is your style or you prefer a calmer, quieter outdoor experience, Golden has activities to please everyone.

In keeping with the CPR tradition, Golden offers a variety of accommodations, ranging from country chalets to the first full-service resort to open in the Rockies in over 25 years.

The people of Golden are closely linked with their spectacular outdoors and the small town feel helps to make Golden unique. Families still spend warm summer Sunday afternoons enjoying a picnic beside the flowing waters of the Columbia River. In the bright, cool days of winter, the time is then spent on the slopes together.

In Golden, the opportunities are endless. Summer or winter, on the slopes or the rivers, safely guided or venturing out on your own—friendly, yet booming, Golden is the outdoor recreation capital of Canada. Enjoy your visit and take advantage of everything Golden has to offer.
