Events & Festivals Golden’s town events include music and art shows all summer, a mountain biking festival in July and the Ice Kicks Winter Carnival in February.
Fishing There’s char in the rivers and trout in the lakes so let the kids catch dinner on a boat or ice fishing trip.
Hiking The pretty and popular 2.5-kilometre (1.5-mile) trail to Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park is a great hike, even for young kids. For a complete list of local hikes, both in the Parks and elsehwere, visit www.GoldenHikes.ca.
Horseback Riding Stop by a guest ranch to book a horseback ride. Try Bear Corner Bed & Bale or Flying W Trail Rides. Or watch the real cowboys ride during Rodeo Days.
Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge While exploring downtown Golden, take a trip over the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge at 8th Ave North. Spanning the river of the same name at 46 m (151 feet) across, it’s the longest freestanding timber frame bridge in Canada.
Rogers Pass The centre at the top of Highway 1 in Glacier National Park has avalanche films, wildlife displays and a scale model of the 349m-deep (1,145 ft) train tunnels under the Pass. (Closed mid-Oct to mid-Nov.)
Sightseeing A simple drive in either direction along Highway 1 will be enough to amaze you, but don’t miss the area’s spectacular scenery from above. Take the Golden Eagle Express Gondola at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort up to 2,347 metres (7,700 feet) for a panoramic view of the Rocky, Purcell and Selkirk Mountains.
Skating & Tobogganning Go outdoor ice skating at Reflection Lake, or indoor skating at the Golden Arena. Pick up a toboggan for a day of sliding down Snake Hill (behind the rodeo grounds).
Swimming Have fun swimming at nearby Cedar Lake. You can also use the facilities at the Golden Swimming Pool.
Zipline Tours Come soar on a fully-engineered zipline system that descends down the mountainside, crossing the majestic Kicking Horse River. banffatvtours.com
